What Is Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Surgery?
Chin Reduction is also called Chin Trimming, Chin Shaving, Reduction Mentoplasty, or Genioplasty. It is a popular cosmetic procedure that reduces the size and projection of the chin, aiming to make the chin and jaw narrower or less protruding. Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) can alter the width, height, and prominence of the chin.
A wide chin is often considered a masculine feature, and it can affect the appearance and proportion of your other facial features, along with your overall facial harmony.
Dr Hunt and Dr Maryam aim to reduce the jaw and reshape it in a way that meets each patient’s desired outcomes. The surgical technique is adjusted to each patient’s own anatomy and cosmetic goals.
How Can Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Help?
The chin plays a central role in facial beauty. However, the chin’s size is not always the sole problem. Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) can address the following concerns:
Wide
Chin
Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) is a surgery to reduce a wide chin and jaw. The surgical procedure can make the chin narrower or pointier. The jaw may then appear to converge together at a smaller angle.
Long
Chin
Some people complain of their chin being too low and far from the lips. This specific issue can affect the proportions of the lower half of your face and the harmony between your nose, mouth, and cheeks.
Prominent
Chin
A chin that’s projecting too much forward is called a “prominent chin.” Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) can reduce the chin prominence, bringing it more inward.
Bifurcated
Chin
This is a typically masculine chin feature. It’s when the chin appears separated with a line in the middle. Chin Shaving (Genioplasty) aims to remove the protruding tubercles.
As you can see, Chin Genioplasty does more than just make your chin smaller. All of these problems can be tackled together in one Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Procedure.
Sometimes, however, Genioplasty results might be asymmetric, uneven, or just less than ideal. This is where the surgeon’s expertise plays a role. You must never compromise when it comes to choosing the right surgeon for a Chin Reshaping Surgery (Genioplasty).
How Is Chin Reduction Surgery Done?
Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) can be done under general anaesthesia. It’s usually done as a one-day surgery or as an overnight case. The theatre time needed is usually 1 to 2 hours.
Your surgeon will start by performing an incision inside the mouth under your front teeth. This needs to be done to better expose the chin bone. Sometimes, an additional, small incision right under the chin (submental incision) is needed. Next, the surgeon will use a sharp instrument to trim the chin bone. He or she might even cut off a part of the bone (Osteotomy) to reposition it, changing the size, angle, and projection of your chin. By doing this, the chin can also be brought closer up to the lips.
The chin will be trimmed and bone layers shaved off until the desired chin shape is achieved. After that, the overlying tissue will be closed with small sutures, and the wound covered with compressive gauze.
Recovery After Chin Reduction Surgery
After getting your chin size reduced, you’ll need to rest for a few days at home. You should take 3 to 5 days off work and allow your body to heal. All in all, recovery after a Genioplasty procedure is regarded as tolerable. You might experience some swelling, bruising, and pain for the first few days. Swelling and bruising typically linger for 1 to 2 weeks and gradually decrease to become unnoticeable at the end of the recovery period.
You can start walking once the anaesthetic fully wears off a few hours after your Reduction Mentoplasty. You will need a responsible person to drive you home from the hospital. Throughout recovery, ensure that you follow Dr Hunt’s instructions and avoid activities that could slow healing, such as smoking and vaping.
