Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Sydney NSW

Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Surgery Sydney to reduce a prominent chin.

Chin Reduction Surgery, also called Reduction Genioplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to make a prominent or big chin smaller & narrower. This can reduce the chin height, bring it inward, or make it more refined. Your chin plays a critical role when it comes to facial aesthetics. A chin that’s too wide can be considered overly masculine, and a chin that’s too protruding can raise concerns about facial profile. Also, chin that’s too far from the lip can disrupt facial harmony. Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) can help reduce a prominent or wide chin. Even when done as a single surgery, it can dramatically change the way your whole face looks.

They customise your procedure to contour the chin and reshape it to give your face more harmony, all within the vision of your desired results.

What Is Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Surgery?

Chin Reduction is also called Chin Trimming, Chin Shaving, Reduction Mentoplasty, or Genioplasty. It is a popular cosmetic procedure that reduces the size and projection of the chin, aiming to make the chin and jaw narrower or less protruding. Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) can alter the width, height, and prominence of the chin.

A wide chin is often considered a masculine feature, and it can affect the appearance and proportion of your other facial features, along with your overall facial harmony.

Dr Hunt and Dr Maryam aim to reduce the jaw and reshape it in a way that meets each patient’s desired outcomes. The surgical technique is adjusted to each patient’s own anatomy and cosmetic goals.

How Can Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Help?

The chin plays a central role in facial beauty. However, the chin’s size is not always the sole problem. Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) can address the following concerns:

Wide chin, icon 01

Wide
Chin

Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) is a surgery to reduce a wide chin and jaw. The surgical procedure can make the chin narrower or pointier. The jaw may then appear to converge together at a smaller angle.

Some people complain of their chin being too low and far from the lips. This specific issue can affect the proportions of the lower half of your face and the harmony between your nose, mouth, and cheeks.

Prominent
Chin

A chin that’s projecting too much forward is called a “prominent chin.” Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) can reduce the chin prominence, bringing it more inward.

Bifurcated chin, icon 01

Bifurcated
Chin

This is a typically masculine chin feature. It’s when the chin appears separated with a line in the middle. Chin Shaving (Genioplasty) aims to remove the protruding tubercles.

As you can see, Chin Genioplasty does more than just make your chin smaller. All of these problems can be tackled together in one Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Procedure.

Sometimes, however, Genioplasty results might be asymmetric, uneven, or just less than ideal. This is where the surgeon’s expertise plays a role. You must never compromise when it comes to choosing the right surgeon for a Chin Reshaping Surgery (Genioplasty).

Who’s a Good Candidate for Chin Shaving (Genioplasty)?

You might be a good candidate if:

  • You have a large, wide, long, or protruding chin
  • You want to make your chin and jaw more feminine
  • You are in generally good health
  • You’re willing to stop smoking for 4 weeks before and 4 weeks after your Mentoplasty
  • You have realistic expectations for the results
  • You can take a few days off work to recover

Benefits of Chin Reduction or Chin Trimming

These are some of the potential benefits that can be achieved with a Chin Reduction (Genioplasty).

  • A narrower, less protruding chin
  • A more proportional face
  • A more feminine chin and jaw
  • A smooth and soft chin contour
  • A slimmer face
  • An altered facial profile

The benefits might not apply to everyone, and patients should consider their options before deciding to pursue surgery. Since each individual has different needs, discussing yours with a qualified plastic surgeon is the best way to learn if the procedure is right for you.

How Is Chin Reduction Surgery Done?

Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) can be done under general anaesthesia. It’s usually done as a one-day surgery or as an overnight case. The theatre time needed is usually 1 to 2 hours.

Your surgeon will start by performing an incision inside the mouth under your front teeth. This needs to be done to better expose the chin bone. Sometimes, an additional, small incision right under the chin (submental incision) is needed. Next, the surgeon will use a sharp instrument to trim the chin bone. He or she might even cut off a part of the bone (Osteotomy) to reposition it, changing the size, angle, and projection of your chin. By doing this, the chin can also be brought closer up to the lips.

The chin will be trimmed and bone layers shaved off until the desired chin shape is achieved. After that, the overlying tissue will be closed with small sutures, and the wound covered with compressive gauze.

Recovery After Chin Reduction Surgery

After getting your chin size reduced, you’ll need to rest for a few days at home. You should take 3 to 5 days off work and allow your body to heal. All in all, recovery after a Genioplasty procedure is regarded as tolerable. You might experience some swelling, bruising, and pain for the first few days. Swelling and bruising typically linger for 1 to 2 weeks and gradually decrease to become unnoticeable at the end of the recovery period.

You can start walking once the anaesthetic fully wears off a few hours after your Reduction Mentoplasty. You will need a responsible person to drive you home from the hospital. Throughout recovery, ensure that you follow Dr Hunt’s instructions and avoid activities that could slow healing, such as smoking and vaping.

Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) Frequently Asked Questions

How Can I Make My Chin Less Prominent?

If you are concerned that your chin projects too much, Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty) may be an option to make it less prominent. The procedure can reshape your chin, aiming to harmonise it with the rest of your facial features.

How Long Do the Results of Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) Last?

A Chin Reduction (Genioplasty) is regarded as permanent. The removed bone never comes back. However, the facial skin might experience ageing with time, making your chin less defined. A Facelift (Rhytidectomy) can help restore the original results of your surgery.

How Can You Fix a Wide Chin?

One way to make a wide chin narrower is Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty), also called Chin Trimming or Chin Shaving. This procedure makes your chin narrower and your jaw less broad by shaving off several outer layers of bone.

Can You Fix a Wide Chin Without Surgery?

No. There’s no non-surgical way to reduce a naturally large chin. The only way is Chin Reduction (Genioplasty). However, if your chin is large due to overactive muscles, rather than simply facial bone structure, this may be treated non-surgically.

What Are the Risks and Complications Associated with This Surgery?

All surgery has risks. The complications of Chin Surgery (Genioplasty) are rare and typically manageable:

Some complications can include:

  • Seroma – Fluid collection in the wound
  • Haematoma – blood collection in the wound
  • Skin numbness – usually due to nerve injury
  • Wound infection – due to pathogenic microbes, usually treated with antibiotics
  • Undesirable results – asymmetry, not enough chin reduction, undesirable chin shape or projection

When it comes to getting the best out of your Genioplasty procedure, your surgeon’s experience plays the biggest role. A specialist plastic surgeon with a good reputation in facial cosmetics is who you want to reshape your chin.
